Remember when Dell sold their laptops as educational tools?

Well, that's over.  Now Dell encourages kids to use their laptops to secretly play stupid video games instead of paying attention in class.

Oh, but maybe the hidden message here is that Peter Parker is already a science savant bored out of his mind in a way-too-easy High School science class, so he can totally ignore the lame teacher and play mind-numbing, time-sucking games and still ace every test?

And I'm not even going to get into the fact that the kid is supposed to be Peter Parker and he's playing a video game starring- his alter ego?  Seriously, what the hell?  Oh wait, I said I wasn't going to get into that.

They're just another corporation already. So what else is new?

  2. Now this is the kind of teacher who you feel a little sympathetic for if she says "There is nothing more important to me than my vacation." I mean, it's gotta be tough to try to teach anyone anything when they're all playing video games in class.

I was back in grad school only a few years ago and at that time, it was Facebook the students were on when they flipped open their laptops and pretended to be paying attention to the lecture. Yeah, I felt old. My first time around, we actually used to all sit there with pens and paper taking notes. OK, yeah, we doodled in the margins. I do recall carrying on a rather lively exchange of notes with a classmate by scribbling in one of my Brit Lit anthologies (and I still have that book). Yeah, texting the old-fashioned way! And we LIKED it!

But you know? We did still do the classwork. Old codgers that we were.

    1. When I was at Catholic University in the 80s I had a huge, shiny dark callous on my finger where the pen rested, I took so many notes so quickly. I had an anthropology book I shared with my girlfriend full of notes we passed back and forth to each other- I wish I still had it, but she walked up with it in the breakup. And my notebooks, which I DO still have, also contain doodles....
